Commissioner publishes letter from the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport asking him to undertake functions under the Royal Charter on self regulation of the press (23 December 2013)

The Commissioner has today (23rd December) received a letter from the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, which asks him to undertake functions under the Royal Charter on self regulation of the press.

The letter explains that the Commissioner has been asked to oversee the appointments to the Board of the Recognition Panel because his office is independent of Government and because his role was created to ensure that public appointments are made on merit in a fair and open way.

The Commissioner will respond to the letter shortly. He is also in parallel considering how to assemble an Appointments Committee with the appropriate skills and experience to make the appointments to the Board of the Recognition Panel. The Committee will be chaired by an independent Public Appointments Assessor as the Royal Charter requires.

Further announcements about the Committee and the process will be made in January.
