Orders in Council

An Order in Council is a form of legislation made in the name of the Monarch ‘by and with the advice and consent’ of the Privy Council. The text is drafted by the Government.

The Commissioner for Public Appointments derives his powers to monitor and regulate Departmental public appointments procedures from Orders in Council. These Orders also include a list of all the bodies that are regulated by the Commissioner.

The Public Appointments Commissioner Order in Council 2016 (PDF, 2 pages, 65 KB) was made at Privy Council on the 19th April 2016 appointing Peter Riddell as Commissioner for Public Appointments.

The Public Appointments Order in Council 2016 (PDF, 10 pages, 489 KB)  was made at the Privy Council on the 13th July 2016, but it did not come into effect until the 1st January 2017 (as provided for in Article 1(1)) to coincide with the introduction of the Governance Code.
